Airlines Condemn "European Mess"

The body that represents the world's airlines, IATA, has criticised Europe's governments for the way they closed air space because of volcanic ash.The head of the airline industry body, Giovanni Bisignani, told the BBC: "This is a European embarrassment and it's a European mess."Millions of passengers have been affected by the crisis, which is now into its fifth day.Britain ordered three Royal Navy ships to help bring home stranded nationals. And the French railway company SNCF has said it will offer reduced fares and 80,000 extra seats between Paris and London this week.European aviation control agency Eurocontrol said only about 30 percent of the normal number of flights -- 8,000 to 9,000 -- would operate in Europe on Monday.Mr Bisignani, of the International Air Transport Association, has said the scale of the crisis facing the airline industry is now greater than at the time of the 9/11 attacks on the US."The decision that Europe has made is with no risk assessment, no consultation, no co-ordination, no leadership," he said."Europeans are still using a system based on a theoretical model which does not work... instead of using a system and taking decisions on facts and on risk assessment."He said airspace closures were costing airlines $200m/day.

Iran sentences 3 opposition activists to prison :

Iran has sentenced three prominent political activists to six years in prison each for involvement in the country's post-election turmoil, the official IRNA news agency reported yesterday. The three are among more than 100 opposition figures who were put on a mass trial in the wake of the country's disputed June presidential elections. The trial has led to a dozen death sentences so far.IRNA said the activists -- Mohsen Mirdamadi, Mostafa Tajzadeh and Davood Soleimani -- were convicted of spreading propaganda against Iran. The court also banned them from any kind of political activity for 10 years. The Iranian opposition, led by Mir Hossein Mousavi, charges that the re-election of President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad was fraudulent and that Mousavi was the rightful winner. In the latest developments in the government push to silence reformist voices, a pro-reform newspaper was ordered shut down over charges of questioning the election and criticizing government officials.

The semi-official Fars news agency reported on Monday that the Press Supervisory Board ordered the Bahar daily closed for "spreading doubts on fundamental issues such as elections, questioning the pillars of the system and libel against state officials."

It didn't provide further details, but government closure of media outlets has become common in the past decade, during which time more than 120 independent and liberal newspapers and magazines have been banned

An American soldier died on Tuesday of wounds he received when hit by rocket or mortar fire in the northern city of Mosul, the US military said, reports AFP. "A Multi-National Division-North Soldier died from injuries sustained during an indirect fire attack in Mosul, Iraq," a statement said. His name was being withheld pending notification of his next of kin and release by the US Department of Defense. The US army says that Mosul is the last bastion of Al- Qaeda in Iraq. Pope admits Church’s ‘shame’ to sex abuse victims :

Pope Benedict XVI on Sunday expressed his personal ‘shame and sorrow’ to victims of paedophile priests at a surprise meeting during a visit to Malta.
The small group of men met Benedict at the papal envoy’s residence in Malta, one of the countries rocked by the international scandal that has shaken the Roman Catholic Church.
The pontiff ‘was deeply moved by their stories and expressed his shame and sorrow over what victims and their families have suffered,’ the Vatican said.
Pope Benedict ‘prayed with them and assured them that the Church is doing, and will continue to do, all in its power to investigate allegations (and) to bring to justice those responsible for abuse,’ it said in a statement.
Benedict promised the victims ‘effective measures designed to safeguard young people in the future.’
The 83-year-old pope arrived in the tiny Mediterranean state on Saturday on his first foreign trip since the focus of the priest sex abuse scandals moved to Europe in recent months.
The pope, who met with victims in Australia and the United States in 2008, has come under increasing pressure over allegations that the Vatican hierarchy, himself included, helped protect predator priests.

Al-Qaida offers exchange for French hostage

CAIRO, Jan 11: An al-Qaida''s North Africa offshoot has demanded the release of four of its members in exchange for a French hostage it kidnapped two months ago, reports AP.
Al-Qaida in the Islamic Maghreb said in a statement posted on an Islamic militant Web site Monday that their only condition for the freeing of Pierre Camatte is the release of four of their group arrested by Mali several months ago.
"We give France and Mali 20 days from the date of issuing this statement to respond to our legitimate demand otherwise the two governments will be fully responsible for the French hostage," it said in its statement dated Sunday.
The group announced last month its kidnapping of Camatte in Mali Nov. 25 and three Spaniards in Mauritania five days later.

                             China Market on North America:
Walk into any Wal-Mart,Zelars, Sears even Dollar Shop, you will not be surprised to see the shelves sagging with Chinese-made goods—everything from shoes and garments to toys and electronics. But the ubiquitous “Made  in China” label obscures an important point: Few of these products are made by indigenous Chinese companies. In fact, you would be hard-pressed to find a single homegrown Chinese firm that operates on a global scale and markets its own products abroad. That is because China’s export-led manufacturing boom is largely a creation of foreign direct investment (FDI), which effectively serves as a substitute for domestic enterpreneursh-ip during the last 20 years.

                                                            Bollywood: Asin acting pricey?

The Ghajini star Asin made news in the past for signing two-film deal with Walt Disney Productions. But the lady has walked off from one of the projects named 'Zokkomon'. Manjari Phadnis who made an unnoticeable debut with film Rok Sako To Rok Lo has replaced Asin. Manjari later revived her career with Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na in which she played the second fiddle to Genelia D'Souza .'Zok-komon' will be directed by Satyajit Bhatkal, who has previously made the documentary on movie Lagaan. It is believed that Asin was approached for this project because of Aamir Khan's recommendation. And the reason for her dropping out is reported to be her quoted price. The lady is learnt to be have demanded a humungous amount which is more than half the film's budget. So while Asin as opted out of 'Zokkomon', her other project with Walt Disney Productions, 'The 19th Step' with Kamal Haasan and Japanese actor Asano Tadanbo is ready to go on floors. Asin's father has confirmed the news that she is not doing 'Zokko-mon', but didn't comment that this was because of monetary reasons. The movie has young star Darsheel Safary and Anupam Kher. For Manjari, it's a good script that came her way after a one-year gap since 'Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na'. And the lady just has to finish the formalities of signing up the movie. And loss  Manjari's gain.
