Michael Jackson
50, suffered a massive heart attack and stopped breathing last night, although the exact
circumstances
of his death are not yet known.
Michael Jackson was born on August 29, 1958 in Gary, Indiana. His father Joseph Walter
was an employee at a steel factory
and mother Katherine was Jehovah’s Witness and raised her kids in that faith. Michael was
the seventh of nine children andhad 5 brothers and 4 sisters. As a young kid of 5,
he performed a Christmas recital in his school and was applauded for his voice.
When he was 11 years old, he joined the band his brothers had formed and soon
got to sing lead vocals.
The band was called ‘The Jackson 5’ and released a number of singles before being signed
by Motown Records label in 1968.
The young Jackson was described as a child prodigy by the Rolling Stone as he used
to sing famous numbers
of Sam Cooke, James Brown, Ray Charles, and Stevie Wonder like a grown up. More

Europe
freeze strands travellers, cuts
powerBERLIN: The Arctic freeze gripping
Europe left hundreds of people stuck in vehicles in deep snow or
stranded at airports with scores of flights cancelled and power
cuts to thousands of homes on Sunday, reports AFP.
The treacherous conditions cut off villages in northern Germany
and on the Baltic islands, and disrupted rail traffic with
Eurostar still only able to run two out of three trains under the
Channel.
The weather, blamed on a low pressure system that forecasters
labelled "Daisy", unleashed blizzards in north Germany that left
motorways, secondary roads and railways impassable at certain
points.
Hundreds found themselves stuck in their cars and lorries in snow,
or in trains overnight on Saturday, authorities said.
"Daisy" dumped even more snow on Germany during Sunday,
particularly in the northeast, and forecasters warned of more to
come overnight and all day Monday, with heavy snow showers
expected to spread southwards.
School was cancelled for Monday in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania
state, while snowsdrifts up to two metres (six feet) high meant
many villages were "left to their own devices", police said.
All of Germany was blanketed with snow, whipped up in some places
by strong winds. Leipzig in the east shivered under 29 centimetres
(11 inches) of snow, Berlin had 27 centimetres and Hamburg in the
northwest 12 centimetres.
Dozens of villages in rural Schleswig-Holstein state and on the
Baltic Sea islands were completely cut off, while more than 1,000
car accidents have been reported across Germany in recent days,
several of them fatal.
Air travel was hit as well, with nearly 100 flights cancelled
Sunday at Frankfurt airport, Europe''s third busiest, after 255
flights were scrapped on Saturday, a spokesman told AFP.
The snowfall which has blanketed Britain for a week eased on
Sunday, but the freezing conditions continued to cause extensive
disruption to air travel.
More than 80 flights were cancelled at London''s Heathrow airport
on Sunday, while low-cost airline Easyjet scrapped almost 100
flights
US soldier killed in
Baghdad
An American soldier died on
Tuesday of wounds he received when hit by rocket or mortar fire in
the northern city of Mosul, the US military said, reports AFP. "A
Multi-National Division-North Soldier died from injuries sustained
during an indirect fire attack in Mosul, Iraq," a statement said.
His name was being withheld pending notification of his next of kin
and release by the US Department of Defense. The US army says that
Mosul is the last bastion of Al- Qaeda in Iraq. At least 4,255 US
military personnel have died in Iraq since the March 2003 US-led
invasion, according to an AFP tally based on the independent website
www.icasualties.org.
US
officials tried to hide immigrant abuse
AFP, WASHINGTON:
US officials used their role as overseers of the country's immigrant
detention centres to cover up evidence of mistreatment and deflect
scrutiny by the media, The New York Times reported late Saturday.Citing documents in its possession, the newspaper said that
investigators had concluded that unbearable, untreated pain had been
a significant factor in the 2007 suicide of a 22-year-old immigrant
detainee at the Bergen County Jail in New Jersey, and that the
medical unit was so poorly run that other detainees were at risk.
The investigation found that medical personnel at the jail had
falsified a medication log to show that the detainee, a Salvadoran
named Nery Romero, had been given Motrin. But the fake entry was easy to detect, the report said. When the
drug was supposedly administered, Romero was already dead.
Those findings were never disclosed to the public or Romero's
relatives on Long Island, who had accused the jail of abruptly
depriving him of his prescription painkiller for a broken leg.
In February 2007, in the case of a dying African man, the
immigration agency's spokesman for the Northeast, Michael Gilhooly,
rebuffed a reporter's questions about the detainee, who had suffered
a skull fracture at the privately run Elizabeth Detention Center in
New Jersey, the paper said.
But records show he had already filed a report warning top managers
at the federal agency about the reporter's interest and sharing
information about the injured man, a Guinean tailor named Boubacar
Bah.
Al-Qaida offers exchange for
French hostage
CAIRO, Jan 11: An al-Qaida''s
North Africa offshoot has
demanded the release of four of
its members in exchange for a
French hostage it kidnapped two
months ago, reports AP.
Al-Qaida in the Islamic Maghreb
said in a statement posted on an
Islamic militant Web site Monday
that their only condition for
the freeing of Pierre Camatte is
the release of four of their
group arrested by Mali several
months ago.
"We give France and Mali 20 days
from the date of issuing this
statement to respond to our
legitimate demand otherwise the
two governments will be fully
responsible for the French
hostage," it said in its
statement dated Sunday.
The group announced last month
its kidnapping of Camatte in
Mali Nov. 25 and three Spaniards
in Mauritania five days later.

China Market on North America:
Walk
into any Wal-Mart,Zelars, Sears even Dollar
Shop, you will not be surprised to see the
shelves sagging with Chinese-made goods—everything from shoes
and garments to toys and electronics. But the ubiquitous “Made in China” label obscures an important point: Few of these
products are made by indigenous Chinese companies. In fact, you
would be hard-pressed to find a single homegrown Chinese firm
that operates on a global scale and markets its own products
abroad.
That is because China’s export-led manufacturing boom is largely
a creation of foreign direct investment (FDI), which effectively
serves as a substitute for domestic
enterpreneursh-ip during the
last 20 years.

Lebanese
army fires on Israeli fighter planes
BEIRUT, Jan 11: Lebanese
anti-aircraft guns opened fire on four Israeli fighter planes which
were violating its air space and flying at low altitude on Monday,
the military said, reports AFP.
"The army''s anti-aircraft guns fired at four enemy Israeli planes
that had been overflying the (southern) area of Marjayoun this
morning," an army spokesman told AFP on condition of anonymity.
An AFP correspondent in southern Lebanon said about 70 rounds had
targeted four Israeli planes.
While Lebanon''s army publishes almost daily reports of Israeli
violations of Lebanese air space, the military rarely opens fire
unless the planes fly within range of its guns.
Bollywood:
Asin acting pricey?
The Ghajini star
Asin made news in the past for signing two-film deal with Walt
Disney Productions. But the lady has walked off from one of the
projects named 'Zokkomon'. Manjari Phadnis who made an
unnoticeable debut with film Rok Sako To Rok Lo has replaced Asin.
Manjari later revived her career with Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na in
which she played the second fiddle to Genelia D'Souza .'Zok-komon'
will be directed by Satyajit Bhatkal, who has previously made the
documentary on movie Lagaan. It is believed that Asin was
approached for this project because of Aamir Khan's
recommendation. And the reason for her dropping out is reported to
be her quoted price. The lady is learnt to be have demanded a
humungous amount which is more than half the film's budget. So
while Asin as opted out of 'Zokkomon', her other project with Walt
Disney Productions, 'The 19th Step' with Kamal Haasan and Japanese
actor Asano Tadanbo is ready to go on floors. Asin's father has
confirmed the news that she is not doing 'Zokko-mon', but didn't
comment that this was because of monetary reasons. The movie has
young star Darsheel Safary and Anupam Kher. For Manjari, it's a
good script that came her way after a one-year gap since 'Jaane Tu
Ya Jaane Na'. And the lady just has to finish the formalities of
signing up the movie.And loss
Manjari's gain.
